The Engagement: July 4, 2007

Ryan proposed to Elisabeth at the Ritz Carlton in Marina Del Rey, in the rose garden, under the fireworks. Elisabeth had spent a relaxing day on the massage table and by the pool, while Ryan had spent an anything-but-relaxing day sneaking off to finalize the proposal plans with the hotel staff. Ryan must be a good actor, because Elisabeth got the surprise of her life that evening.

Area Hotels We Recommend

COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT - OLD TOWN PASADENA
180 North Fair Oaks Avenue
Pasadena, California 91103
Phone: (626) 403-7600
Toll Free: (800) 321-2211
www.courtyardpasadena.com
We’ve reserved a block of rooms here for our out-of-town guests, and we’ll be staying here as well. The rate will be $129 per night for Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday nights. You must reserve more than three weeks before the wedding to get this group rate! (And we’re advised that they fill up quickly in October — football season — so book early.) Otherwise, rates are $149 per night for a king, and $169 per night for two queens. This place is fantastic — very nice rooms (the king bed rooms also have a sofa bed), a bar, a restaurant, free Internet, beautiful pool area — and just two blocks from shopping, bars, movie theaters, and restaurants on Colorado Boulevard in Old Town Pasadena. Just a few minutes by car to the Altadena Town & Country Club.

THE HILTON PASADENA
168 South Los Robles Avenue
Pasadena, California 91101
Tel: (626) 577-1000
The Hilton is a little bit further from both Old Town Pasadena and the Altadena Town & Country Club — and the rates are higher — but if you’re looking for luxury, the Hilton is it. $249 to $269 per night.

QUALITY INN PASADENA
3321 E. Colorado Blvd.
Pasadena, California 91107
Phone: (626) 796-9291
The Quality Inn is the furthest from the action in Old Town Pasadena and from the Altadena Town & Country Club, but it’s still only 15 minutes by car. This place is no-frills but clean, and the rooms have recently been redone. $85 per night. (I checked out lots of hotels in the area in this price range, and I’d have to say that the Quality Inn is the only hotel/motel in this price range that I would recommend in the Pasadena/Altadena area. The rest are, as the kids say, sketchy.)
